The 2016 season for NXT has been something to remember. With the division continuing to prove that it’s not just the minor leagues that had a ton of memorable moments. With four more Takeover specials this year, including heading back to Brooklyn and their second international special - November 19th in Toronto, Canada - the brand has lost several stars to the ‘big leagues’ of 'RAW' and 'SmackDown'.
Despite losing these Superstars, others like Shinsuke Nakamura have come into their own and may challenge for a call up in 2017. Samoa Joe became the first two-time NXT Champion, and the Dusty Rhodes tournament was another resounding success.
Here are 8 amazing matches from this year:
1. Shinsuke Nakamura vs Sami Zayn (NXT Takeover: Dallas) - In Nakamura’s NXT debut, he was up against a veteran in Zayn, and the Japanese Superstar did not disappoint. Defeating Zayn in an epic 20 minute match, he started on his path to becoming the reigning champion.
2. Samoa Joe vs Finn Balor (NXT Takeover: The End) - Even though Balor ended up getting called up this year, he still put on some amazing matches in NXT. This one, where he lost to Joe in a steel cage was one of the best.
3. #DIY vs Authors of Pain (NXT November 9th) - Suplexing Rezar is no easy task. That’s what Tommasso Ciampa did in this Dusty Rhodes semi-final just before the big Albanian caught both #DIY members and threw them to the mat.
4. Samoa Joe vs Shinsuke Nakamura (NXT Takeover: Toronto) - At the last special of the year, the division’s two biggest stars battled for the second time and it was a thing of beauty. Returning from injury, Nakamura couldn’t take down Joe again to keep the title.
