According to the instructor in the video, when someone falls into the water, the body goes into shock and starts to hyperventilate. Instead of letting yourself go on autopilot, it’s important to try to keep calm while maintaining the head above water.

Once you manage to calm yourself down, you need to try to head back to the part of the ice you walked in on. Although this might sound counterintuitive, keep in mind that everything around that place was strong enough to support you, so it will be your best shot at getting out.

Then you need to try to pull yourself up while staying as horizontal as possible. Don’t try to do it too quickly, or you’ll slip into the water again. Once you’re in horizontal position, start kicking your legs--this will push you out of the water.
