This incident is an example of how vital a gun in the hands of a citizen was in order to save the day. An Estero, Florida resident was driving along the highway when they saw someone beating up a police officer on the side of the road.

The details of the situation are that Lee County Sheriff’s Deputy, Dean Bardes, was in a high-speed car chase with a suspect, reports NBC 2. The Deputy was responding to an accident scene when he saw the suspect speed by the scene while driving recklessly. Knowing that his driving was a danger to the public, the Deputy gave pursuit.

Deputy Bardes was chasing the suspect for a number of miles when the suspect finally stopped the car on an off-ramp. When the suspect pulled over, he began a brutal assault on Deputy Bardes, and had it not been for the intervening citizen he very well could have been beaten to death.
