Simpsons Writer Reveals How They Predicted Trump's Presidency

Sixteen years ago, ‘The Simpsons’ made the wild prediction that Donald Trump would become President of the United States. Now, the prophetic joke has become America’s reality and the writers behind everyone’s favorite cartoon family have revealed how they managed to see into the future.

The episode ‘Bart to the Future,’ which aired in March 2000, featured a grown-up Lisa Simpson taking on the role of President after her predecessor had tanked the economy. That predecessor was a fictionalized Donald Trump, which writer Dan Greaney says was a ‘warning to America.’

‘That just seemed like the logical lost stop before hitting bottom,’ Greaney told The Hollywood Reporter. ‘It was consistent with the vision of America going insane. What we needed was for Lisa to have problems beyond her fixing, that everything went as bad as it possibly could, and that’s why we had Trump be president before her.’

The show’s creator Matt Groening admitted previously, ‘Back in 2000 Trump was, of course, the most absurd placeholder joke name that we could think of at the time and that’s still true. It’s beyond satire.’
