The BBC reports that an airport press release disclosed that the airplane was reporting an electrical fault to the control tower. Flight CP-2933 was given priority to land, but it never made it to the airport, according to the head of Colombia's civil aviation authority, Alfredo Bocanegra. It ended up crashing in Cerro Gordo, in La Union in the mountains.

Only six people survived the crash, and it's believed that the pilot of the airplane, Miguel Quiroga, did everything he could to prevent any more fatalities. He opened the fuel door which released the bulk of the fuel inside the jet.

If he had not made this move, the plane would have burst into flames upon impact, and would have almost certainly killed everyone on board the aircraft.
