The city council of Shawano passed an ordinance giving police the right to fine the parents of bullies. The ordinance works to prohibit all types of harassment from in-school tormenting to cyberbullying on social media.

The new approach to tackle bullying will give the parents of bullies a warning after the first incident, but if the child’s behavior doesn’t change within a three month period, they’ll be fined $366. If bullying continues, repeat offenders will be fined $681.

‘This isn’t generated towards the kids being kids, some playground banter,’ police Chief Mark Kohl says about the ordinance. ‘This is the person that is meticulously using social media or saying things that are vulgar in an attempt to hurt.’
