The ‘Modern Family’ actress Ariel Winter is no stranger to being body-shamed given that she’s had to battle critics repeatedly who judge her over her choice of clothing. From people taking issue with her wearing a low-cut bikini, to a tight dress, now she’s receiving some heat from commenters who have a problem with the actress wearing shorts. People had a lot to say after Winter posted an Instagram photo in which she’s wearing shorts and a lacy top.
In the post, she writes, “Pretty annoyed about the focus on the fact that I wear shorts and the commentary that I’m ‘squeezing’ into them or the idea that it’s not okay for me to wear shorts. It’s SUMMER. Get over it. It’s hot, I’m obviously going to wear minimal clothes. I’m not going to suffer in a turtleneck to please anyone.”
She was upset and found it ridiculous how often she gets body-shamed over her choices, she continues, “I’m not an [expletive] because I wear shorts and tank tops. I’m a normal girl. Also, I’m not ‘squeezing’ into anything. My shorts fit me and everything I’m doing is just fine.”
The sitcom star also defended other women in her post, who have also faced similar criticism due to their bodies and choice of clothing, stating, “Please leave young women alone. We’re just living our lives. It’s really troubling that we even have to deal with this kind of stuff nowadays. Please stop criticizing everything everyone does!!!!! Rant over!”
This is not the first time that Winter has been outspoken about unwarranted critique over her choice of dress. She has often expressed that the regulations set on women over their own bodies are outrageous and especially damaging to younger girls who should be learning that they are capable of making their own choices.
After people had much to say about what was thought to be a revealing bikini in May, Winter went on record to set it straight that she really couldn’t care less about people’s negative and backward opinion of her. Winter stated, “I went through a lot of hate online, so I tried to change myself for a really long time. But people just kept hating on me no matter what I did.”
In an interview she gave to Refinery 29, Winter explains, “I decided that instead of pleasing these other people, I’ll just spend that time pleasing myself […] Those people are going to be rude to me regardless of what I do, so I should just try and be happy with what I am.” Wise words from the teenager and hopefully they will resonate with young girls.
