A couple from the Bhabhua district in Bihar, India, noticed that their newborn baby boy had a painfully large swollen stomach. The boy, who has not yet been named, was only three months old at the time that he was admitted to the hospital for treatment. Originally, doctors suspected it to be a ‘kidney mass’ or a ‘tumor’ but after the operation it was revealed that the mass was actually the boy’s twin trapped inside his stomach.
Surgeons revealed a two pound parasite twin that was trapped inside the boy’s stomach.
Doctors say the trapped, parasitic twin was feeding off of the newborn boy.
Ranjubala and Satyendra Yadav from India are the parents of this baby boy. They noticed that their child had a distended stomach so they took him to a local doctor.
After multiple consultations, the local doctors thought the distension was due to a urine problem or a ‘tumour.’
Unsure of what it actually was, the parents visited the Banaras Hindu University Medical College and Hospital in Uttar Pradesh where the skilled surgeons were able to successfully operate on the three month old boy.
After the surgery, the doctors found that the ‘tumor’ was, in fact, the baby’s twin, complete with eyes and skin, who was trapped inside the boy’s stomach.
The surgeons also discovered that the trapped twin was actually a parasite who was feeding off of the newborn.
This condition is known as ‘fetus in fetu’ and is an extremely rare condition with a total of 200 reported cases worldwide.
‘Fetus in fetu’ occurs when there is an incomplete separation of the twins. The twins then fail to grow separately and one grows into the internal part of the healthy twin. It is estimated that 1 in every 500,000 live births results in this developmental abnormality. Experts believe that this abnormality could be caused by one or two reasons.
The first is that the mass grows as one normal fetus but then becomes enveloped inside of its own twin. The second theory suggests that the mass is actually a highly developed teratoma, which is a tumor with tissue or organ components.
The doctor who cared for the baby boy, Dr. SP Sharma said: ‘the baby was wrongly diagnosed with a tumor. We were surprised and shocked to see a malformed fetus inside his stomach.’
‘We have successfully operated to remove the parasite twin out of his body. The baby is recovering well after the operation. He has been shifted to ICU.’ The doctor went on to say that he hopes to discharge the child ‘sometime by the end of this week.’
The father said: ‘we were blessed with a baby four years after our marriage but we were always living in fear that the baby might not live long as his condition started worsening within days after birth.’
He continued: ‘I see these doctors here as the living incarnation of God. They have not only cured our baby and rid us of all our pains too.’
