In recent years, western society has gained an obsession with coconut oil. People cook with it, put it on their skin and hair, and use it as a replacement for practically anything that calls for olive oil.
And while coconut oil can be great for your skin, hair, and nails, it is important that we keep in mind that there’s no such thing as a superfood or universal magical oil.
When it comes to coconut oil being bad for you, well, this all stems from a recent report by the American Heart Association. The report labels coconut oil as having a negative effect on your health and advises against its use (cooking-wise, mostly).
The AHA isn’t the only one warning against it either. The Dietary Fats and Cardiovascular Disease Advisory also reviewed coconut oil and came to the same conclusions. Turns out coconut oil actually increased “bad” cholesterol (LDL) in seven out of seven controlled trials.
There was no difference between coconut oil and other oils saturated in high fats. Such other negative impact oils include beef fat, butter, and pork lard. Coconut oil actually has a higher saturated fat than all three, with 82% of the fat in coconut oil being of the saturated variety.
