Last month, surveillance video of a couple assaulting a female restaurant owner and her 15-year-old daughter took the Internet by storm. According to Qwik Chick owner, Jeanette Norris, the couple created a commotion over the fact that their chicken was cold and their meal did not include enough french fries.
Norris reportedly apologized and refunded the couple’s money, but it didn’t stop them from inciting violence. The couple began hitting the store’s window. The previously unidentified female attacked Norris, mercilessly hitting her when Norris stepped outside to let them know that the police had been notified.
Norris’ 15-year-old daughter went to check on her mother after the attack but was then punched directly in the face by the unknown man who was more than twice her size. The hit sent the 15-year-old hurling backward. She is seen in the video having difficulties keeping her balance afterward.
After the brutal assault, the Smiths then took off in their silver-colored 2007 Cadillac Escalade. Customers who saw the incident rushed to comfort the pair and help them receive medical attention. Norris and her daughter were both left with black eyes and Norris had to be treated for a broken nose. The 15-year-old girl was diagnosed with a concussion.
Police released the surveillance video in hopes of getting a lead on the identity of the attackers, and luckily they did. (Note: the video footage shows a date of 2010 because the store owner did not fix the date on the machine). The couple was quickly identified as Nathaniel Eric Smith and Latasha Smith, but they remained at large for two weeks.
One customer couldn’t believe what he’d just witnessed. He told a local Georgia news outlet that he was in shock that a grown man could punch a child like that. “He needs putting in jail,” he said. James Godfrey, Chief of the Baxley Police Department, said he had never seen such a senseless crime in his 41 years of service.
As of July 7th, 2017, Latasha and Nathaniel surrendered themselves into the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office in the early morning. The couple currently faces aggravated assault charges stemming from the attack on June 22.
