16 Design Fails That You Won’t Believe Actually Happened

Design can be beautiful, visionary, and inspiring. A lot of the time, though, it just plain sucks.

These 16 total design fails range the whole spectrum of failure, from accidental to unfortunately intentional, from understandable to incomprehensible, from adorable to the kind of thing that makes you want to pour bleach directly onto your retinas (honestly, more of the latter).

So if you want to start your new year off with some good, old-fashioned schadenfreude, read on!

I know this is deliberate! I know this is meant to be exactly the way it is! I just think … it really shouldn’t be.

Okay, but is that really the image that you want to be associated with your airline? I mean, really?

Fun typography fact! Kerning is the art of adjusting the spaces between letters and words in a font or design to achieve a visually pleasing result. In other words, the exact opposite of what’s going on down below here!

You know how your grade-school art teacher told you to be creative and think outside of the box? Well, I’m here to tell you, “Don’t be creative, don’t think outside of the box and, for the love of god, don’t try to be smart about the order you put letters in!”

I mean, in our current capitalist hellscape where people working 70-hour workweeks can barely make rent payments, maybe “die for success” isn’t as much of a mistake as it looks like.

Heading up an organization, it’s important to let workers know exactly how much their input is valued at the company.

I gotta admit, the first time I read this, I was genuinely concerned that I’d had a stroke. (Hint: read top to bottom, if you really care that much about what this disaster sign says.)

Look, I’m a firm believer in the power of fonts, how they can enhance your reading experience, evoke emotions, even fix positioning mistakes. But there are some mistakes that even fonts can’t fix, and this is one of them. 

Sometimes, just from looking at the final product, you can learn things about the people involved in the decision-making process. For example, you can tell just from looking at this raft that there were exactly zero women involved in the making or marketing of!
