Despite the way we might think of celebrities, not all of them had an easy time making it to the top. While certain celebrities we know and love may have been born into their lifestyle, others have “started from the bottom,” as Drake so eloquently put it.
Ed Sheeran is one of those celebrities who worked his way up to stardom. If you’re a fan of his then you might recall him talking about crashing on various people’s couches as he went from gig to gig.
It can be a little odd to imagine that considering the fact that Sheeran is a big household name now. You can’t turn on the radio without hearing “Shape Of You” at least twice, but, nonetheless, Sheeran wouldn’t be where he is today without the help of other stars in the industry.
As it turns out, Jamie Foxx was one of those stars who gladly opened up his door to Sheeran while he was just starting out. Foxx has done a lot for Hollywood over the years from music to comedy, to action films, and now he’s even directly responsible for gifting us with Ed Sheeran.
While talking with ET Online about upcoming stars Foxx said, “I had Ed Sheeran sleep on my couch for six weeks. Before he made it, he came to my crib.”
“You gotta press anybody that’s got that artistic feel, that tough, you’ve got to lift them up.”
We couldn’t agree more with Jamie Foxx’s viewpoint on supporting other artists.
Jamie Foxx is well-known in the industry for being a pretty nice dude overall.
The unlikely duo actually met seven years ago when Sheeran appeared on Foxx’s radio show. “I got on with him really well and hung out for a bit,” Sheeran told the BBC back in 2010. “He’s just a really, really nice dude.”
It was thanks to this slot on Jamie Foxx’s show that Sheeran was able to obtain talks for a deal with a major record company in New York.
“I got a call one day saying that a girl who was a junior in the record company has heard your stuff [on the show], she sent it up to the head and he’d like to fly you over. It was the best news.”
So, as it turns out, Jamie Foxx’s support of Ed Sheeran is actually directly responsible for Sheeran’s fame. Granted, we believe he would’ve made it without Foxx, but it’s just really nice that he didn’t have to.
