Before Nigel Fitton’s wife, Phedre Fitton, died of ovarian cancer four years ago, she had one request for him: to continue watering her plants in the washroom. Honouring her request, Nigel watered his wife’s beloved plants for years. Their daughter, Atonia Nicol told CTV News that her father was very proud that he was able to keep the plants alive all of those years.
The plant certainly remained in the same state as when Phedre was alive but that has less to do with the attention and care that Nigel provided them, and more to do with the make-up of the plants. Phedre, who was known for her sense of humor, had decided to play one last prank on her husband from beyond the grave.
About one year ago, Nicol was helping her father move his belongings into a retirement home when they discovered that the plants that Nigel had been faithfully watering were fake. It turns out that Phedre had thought this one through. Since there was hardly any lighting in the bathroom, Phedre replaced the real plants with plastic ones knowing that it would be difficult to tell right away.
In a message she posted, Nicol wrote, “We all found it hilarious. Especially my dad who had been so impressed he hadn’t killed them off.” If you are wondering where all the water went that the plant hadn’t absorbed, Nicol’s explained, “My poor dad probably thought the toilet had a permanent leak as there was always water on the floor.”
