Wonder Woman was just released and it’s already making headlines. The movie, starring Israeli-born actress Gal Gadot, has been the talk of the town all over social media and around the world. People are praising her performance, her grace, and her ability to play the role of a female superhero — all while being pregnant.
Yes, you read that right. Believe it or not, Gal Gadot was actually pregnant during part of Wonder Woman’s production.
The movie has been shattering box office records since its opening. It has already become the most tweeted-about movie in 2017. It has gained more attention now that it has been revealed that Gadot was pregnant during parts of the filming.
Gadot explained in an interview with Marie Claire that she had initially decided to hide her pregnancy while filming the movie.
She explained that she didn’t want to be treated any differently on set and that she spent a lot of time being sick while filming.
“I gutted it out. I started to come to set with sunglasses,” she said.
“I had this jug of water with huge pieces of ginger. One of the producers kept on asking, ‘Why are you drinking that potato water?’ They thought I’d gone Hollywood.”
Gadot revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that while filming reshoots for Wonder Woman, the crew had to go to some great lengths to cover up her bump.
“On close-up, I looked very much like Wonder Woman,” the actress said. “On wide shots, I looked very funny, like Wonder Woman pregnant with Kermit the Frog.”
In the interview, Gadot revealed that the costume crew used green fabric to cover the front part of her armor so that it could be digitally altered post filming.
Although Gadot was five months pregnant while filming the reshoots, she admits that she didn’t let the pregnancy hold her back while filming both Wonder Woman and November’s Justice League.
“[Gadot’s] pregnant during part of the movie, in a suit out in a field in the freezing cold in others,” said Patty Jenkins, director of the now box-office success.
“There are so many things we asked her to do: Now do it on one foot. Now shout while you’re doing it. Now it’s raining in the freezing cold and you’ve lost your voice, go. Every day it was a hilarious gauntlet and she would do it,” she continued.
Gadot gave birth to Maya, her second daughter with husband Yaron Varsano, in March of this year.
Maya isn’t the first daughter in the family. The couple welcomed their baby girl Alma to the world five years ago.
Gadot told The Mirror that she is glad her daughter got to be a part of the experience with her, even if she hadn’t been born yet.
“And now, it’s nice to look at the movie and know that Maya is in the movie with me in some way. I love that. She has an entry on IMDB. It took me years to get mine.”
Considering Gadot’s amazing portrayal of the legendary superhero, her commitment and determination to the role show us all that she really is a Wonder Woman of sorts.
With the movie’s feminist undertones and positive portrayal of women, it seems like Gal Gadot has made a huge step for women superheroes in movies, and we can’t get enough of it!
