It’s no secret that George Clooney really has it all in this life. He’s managed to have a successful career in Hollywood, he’s considered one of the best looking men ever and he married a beautiful and successful woman.
On top of all that, he welcomed two adorable twins into this world. Is it even possible for him to do something more that could make us envy him just a little bit more? Apparently, this is possible for George Clooney.
Not a lot of people may know this, but the actor and his friends founded one of the fastest-growing tequila brands in the world back in 2013. The company is called Casamigos and it was just sold for $1 billion.
The transaction is set to close during the second half of 2017 according to Business Insider. The company was purchased by British booze giant Diageo.
Maxim reports that Clooney never expected this level of success when he first started the company. It was a passion project of his, and one that he took on with a partner and friend.
He said that if someone had asked him “four years ago if we had a billion dollar company. I don’t think we would have said yes. This reflects Diageo’s belief in our company and our belief in Diageo.”
His statement continued, saying: “We’re not going anywhere. We’ll still be very much a part of Casamigos. Starting with a shot tonight. Maybe two.”
Originally, Clooney began this Tequila company as just a personal passion project with his friends Rande Gerber and real estate mogul Michael Meldman.
Clooney told Maxim in 2016, “We just started making bottles for ourselves to drink and everybody liked it so we felt that this might be something we should sell.”
Co-founder and ex-bar and nightclub owner Rande Gerber told Business Insider back in March that the reason for launching this brand was never to make money.
He told Business Insider, “What was really important for George and I was that we have the best tequila, but we make it affordable for everyone. George doesn’t need the money, I didn’t need it, Mike didn’t need it.”
According to CNBC, Diageo is set to pay $700 million initially, with potentially adding another $300 million based on the tequila’s performance over 10 years.
The name “Casamigos” was the name of Clooney and Gerber’s property in Mexico back in the day. According to Business Insider, the houses sat beside each other on the piece of property.
Gerber noted, “It felt like one compound. We’d have a bunch of our friends there—breakfast at our place, lunch at his, dinner at ours. It felt like one big house.”
As all trips in Mexico, their meals often involved sipping tequila. Eventually, the two connected with Mike and began building their Tequila company.
After coming up with the idea, Clooney and Gerber did research, met with distillers, tried samples and did blind taste tests with their friends and family until they found the perfect recipe that didn’t burn.
Gerber told Business Insider, “It ended up being almost two years and 700 samples later: it was perfect. There was a point where we all chose one, and it was ours.”
Bottles were then ordered, served, and drank at their homes in Casamigos, which means “House of Friends.”
This really did seem like a passion project for these guys, and though money was not the driving force, selling what they really love definitely brought up Clooney up on the money ladder.
