Ginuwine, real name Elgin Baylor Lumpkin, is a 47-year-old American singer, songwriter, dancer and actor. He was one of R&B’s top artists between the late 90’s and the early 2000’s. But recently, Ginuwine entered the spotlight once again after he turned down a kiss from a trans woman.
It was on Celebrity Big Brother where Ginuwine was seen refusing a kiss from fellow housemate India Willoughby.
The show airs twice a year and just recently Big Brother launched an all-female cast of celebrities in order to commemorate 100 years of women’s right to vote.
India Willoughby is a 51-year-old broadcaster and journalist. She is also a news presenter on BBC and is the first trans woman to lead an all-female talk show.
It was on an episode of Celebrity Big Brother UK when a trans woman by the name of India Willoughby asked if Ginuwine would ever date a trans person.
India went up to Ginuwine and asked: ‘you would date me, yeah?’ to which Ginuwine responded, ‘not if you were trans.’
Despite his answer, India tried to swoop in and place a kiss on the ‘Pony’ singer’s cheek, which he promptly denied. At the refusal, India could be seen storming out of the set.
Many people called Ginuwine transphobic since he turned down the advances of a trans woman. One woman by the name of Kiera tweeted: ‘the s**t between India and Ginuwine IS transphobia & i’m tired of them saying that it isn’t. If you say you won’t date someone because they’re trans but you would date them if you didn’t know, IT IS TRANSPHOBIA.’
While some deemed his actions transphobic, there were just as many people who thought that his reaction was acceptable.
Rodney Blu tweeted: ‘okay, so lemme get this right: Ginuwine is ASKED if he’d ever date a trans woman. He RESPONDS no. The trans woman asking then IGNORES both his stated preferences and his agency and TRIES TO KISS Ginuwine, which he rejects. And all this makes Ginuwine transphobic?’
Code of Culture went on Twitter to say: ‘why did #Ginuwine HAVE TO kiss her? AND who cares what his reason was for NOT wanting to kiss her. His Body, his choice. No means no.’
