In an in-depth interview with Playboy magazine, Halsey details her experience of growing up biracial but “passing” for white. The 22 year-old-old New Jersey native discusses what it’s like feeling that you live in an in-between space – neither here, nor there.

She says that every once in a while she experiences “racial blips” and reveals, “I look like a white girl, but I don’t feel like one. I’m a black woman.”
She talks about how this has been challenging for her, especially as she got older stating, “When I was growing up I didn’t know if I was supposed to love TLC or Britney'”.
Halsey claims that when people found out her dad is black,
Speaking about her dad, Halsey says, “I’m half black. My dad managed a car dealership, wore a suit to work, had a nice watch, was always clean-shaven, handsome, played golf on the weekends.”
She adds that while she’s with her dad “…people would come up to him like Yo, brotha! What’s up! And my dad would be like, Hi.…”
