Jaden Smith Carried His Own Cut-Off Dreadlocks At The Met Gala, Here’s Why

The Met Gala is an annual fundraising event which benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. Each year it celebrates a different theme and also marks the opening of the institute’s yearly fashion exhibit. The gala is a high profile event and is attended by celebrities dressed in their best, most fashion-savvy outfits.

The cost of a ticket for anyone outside of the official guest list is $30,000, and the event includes a cocktail hour with a red carpet, entertainment, and a formal dinner.

This year, all of our favorite celebrities were dressed to impress. One person in particular who broke fashion boundaries and surprised us all was Will Smith’s fashion savvy son, Jaden Smith.

Smith attended the event in an all black Louis Vuitton suit…with an interesting accessory: a handful of his own cut-off dreadlocks.

Smith decided to bring his own locks of hair with him to the high-profile event to match the theme of the gala this year, which was Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons: Art Of The In-Between.

Rei Kawakubo is an influential designer who “invites us to rethink fashion as a site for content creation, recreation, and hybridity,” says Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute’s curator in charge.

Jaden Smith is well known for his unique and eclectic fashion sense and often bizarre but intriguing behavior, but somehow he managed to pull a fast one on us all with his unconventional accessory choice.

Smith recently cut off his infamous dreadlocks for a movie role. Considering he cut off his hair a few weeks ago, it’s a bit surprising to some people that he bothered to keep it around for so long.

We’re not really sure what he did with the hair when he actually went inside, but he held it tightly in his hand as he walked the red carpet and posed for pictures.

Smith attended the event in an all-black Louis Vuitton ensemble clad with high heel boots, jewelry, and even a grill.

To top off the look, he brought his own cut-off dreadlocks to the event, carrying it close like a clutch.

The 18-year-old has been defying gender norms in fashion for years now. Known for his choice of bizarre yet captivating gender-neutral outfits, Jaden never fails to surprise us with his quirky and intriguing behavior.

And when it comes to fashion, there are no limits for this young celebrity.

Smith’s dad, the Fresh Prince himself, was the one who cut off his son’s hair, documenting it on Facebook for the world to see.

The event was attended by countless celebrities ranging from the Kardashians to Selena Gomez to Rihanna, and the celebs were definitely dressed to impress on one of fashion’s biggest nights of the year.

Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams acted as the co-chairs of the event, while celebs like Kylie Jenner took it upon herself to break the infamous no selfie ban by snapping a bathroom selfie with a bunch of her celeb friends.

The selfie ban was enforced in 2015 by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who has refused to reveal why she imposed the ban.

It makes sense, though. The event is extremely exclusive, and outside of the red carpet, it’s a big no-no to take pictures — especially selfies.

Whether or not some celebs choose to follow the no selfie rule, one thing is for sure…when it comes to fashion, celebrities have no limits and even less shame…even if that means carrying around a handful of dreadlocks at an event that costs $30,000 to attend.
