For law enforcement officers in the United States, it has been a challenging time in the age of protest and rebellion against authorities. Due to some questionable incidents that have taken place in the past, America has seemingly been fighting back in the name of justice. One of the more prominent figures in this movement has been NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, whose latest prison stunt has law enforcement claiming that it endangers their lives.
Stealing the show with his choice to kneel during the United States national anthem, Kaepernick has ever since been leading a movement that’s seen many people, and athletes alike, rebelling against authorities. Fighting against the long battle of police brutality, he chose to not give the national anthem any recognition, which led to hundreds echoing his choice. It became a viral trend, and he has since not suited up for or signed with another NFL team.
Invited by New York City officials, the revolutionary in the eyes of many made an appearance to speak with inmates on Rikers Island. This left correction officers feeling that it threatens the power of authority, making their jobs “harder and more dangerous”. With a figure that has now been publicly known to oppose authoritative matters, they fear it gives inmates the wrong example going forward.
“That’s crazy to me to have a person like Colin Kaepernick in prison talking about police brutality,” one officer told the New York Post. It’s believed to be a professional and personal burden, in this case, leaving authorities feeling insulted. “In the inmate’s eyes, we are the police when they are locked u,p” the officer added, with a figure like Kaepernick having the influence and ability to challenge that.
