June Shannon, better known as Mama June, made her name known when she dominated reality television with her instantly quotable pageant contestant daughter by appearing in the shows:
- “Toddlers & Tiaras”
- “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo”
- Multiple seasonal specials.
While her previous television appearances may have highlighted her and her family’s less than stellar dietary lifestyle choices, her new show, Mama June: From Not to Hot, shows the reality mom flip the script and embrace health and fitness.
Shannon put in extensive work and was able to completely transform her body, slimming down from 460 pounds to a size 4. Mama June’s trainer shared some of Shannon’s secrets that helped her shed the weight.
Fans were used to seeing Mama June guzzling soda and downing fistfuls of cheese balls, but now that the reality star has dropped 300 lbs from dieting, exercise, and excess skin removal surgery, she’s not looking back.
“I know myself — I’m never going to go back to what I was before,” Shannon told People Now. “It’s all about maintaining. I’m kind of obsessed with the scale, and beating myself up even if I gain a few ounces or a pound.”
One of the biggest changes Mama June underwent was what she was consuming on a regular basis and how to swap out the junk food for healthier alternatives.
Shannon’s trainer, Kenya Crooks, revealed to People Magazine some of the swaps Mama June made to her diet to lose weight and keep it off.
One thing Shannon cut out of her life prior to the major diet was her consumption of soda. Her daughter, Pumpkin, was told by a neurologist to no longer drink pop after she suffered a brain injury following a car crash.
Just like Pumpkin, Mama June decided to quit the sugary stuff also. “I was drinking three to four Code Reds a day, and I just went cold turkey that day,” Shannon told People Now.
Kenya Crooks chimed in to say that soda lovers should make the switch to fruit-infused water to help quit the habit. Shannon herself has opted for Propel flavored waters as a substitute, saying that they taste enough like soda to suffice.
“For people who don’t like to drink water by itself, what we’ve done is we’ve thrown some strawberries and kiwi in there,” Crooks says. “It’s really good, and it helps you get it down a whole lot faster.”
How has Mama June steered clear of the sweets? Crooks says watermelon is a great substitute to satisfy sugar cravings without packing on the pounds.
“The cool thing about watermelon is that it’s basically 92 percent liquid,” Crooks told People Now. “It satisfies your sweet tooth, but you can also pee-pee that thing right out!”
As for those who find their hands continually in a bag of chips for a snack, Crooks highly suggests going for apple chips or grapes, which have become Shannon’s new snack of choice.
“Grapes are probably my favorite thing,” Shannon said and revealed it’s a snack she’s gotten her daughters into as well. “The grapes the girls actually like, but the watermelon more so than the grapes.”
Mama June’s incredible transformation has inspired many others to make healthier choices. Shannon has offered some advice for those looking to embark on a weight loss journey.
“Take it one day at a time,” Shannon advises. “Don’t ever give up. You don’t have to be perfect, just take it at the pace you want to. It’s all in moderation, especially the eating!”
It’s these simple dietary food swaps that can make a big difference. Kenya Crooks would know considering he’s considered to be one of the top weight loss experts around.
“I’ve worked my [expletive] off working out, getting healthy,” Shannon said on the show finale. “And now I feel like becoming the person on the outside that I always felt like on the inside.”
