When the HBO title card is a precursor to the show you are about watch, you know that the rules of basic cable are not going to apply. This is one channel that isn’t going to pan away to a fireplace when things get steamy on screen. HBO’s wildly popular fantasy series Game of Thrones is no exception, but one recent scene left a lot of viewers logistically confused.
In the second episode of season 7, the sexual tension between the characters Missandei and Grey Worm finally peaked much to the satisfaction and confusion of Game of Thrones fans. The scene occurred when Missandei got a moment alone with Grey Worm before he went off on a potentially fatal mission to Casterly Rock. However, fans have been taking to social media to express their bewilderment of how this could happen.
Grey Worm’s character is known to be a eunuch, meaning that he was previously castrated, a status which certainly makes intimacy unconventional. The actress who plays Missandei, Nathalie Emmanuel, decided to share her thoughts on the matter and explained how she believes the scene would’ve been possible.
“We’ve seen them show their interest in each other, we’ve seen them in a roundabout way express it for each other, but not really say it,” Emmanuel told Entertainment Weekly. “This point is the climax and they physically act upon it.”
Nathalie Emmanuel continued to share her thoughts on the intimate scene, stating, “There’s something unique about it purely because of Grey Worm’s situation. His brutal history of being mutilated — there’s a real sense of trust here and that really plays out in this lovely scene where they physically act upon their love.”
“For [Grey Worm] to do that is a really big deal and Missandei knows that and doesn’t really care,” Emmanuel told Entertainment Weekly. “She just loves him and that intimacy they’ve shared comes to a head. Missandei is always so official and straight and poised so to be vulnerable and see her human side of her, a little off balance, is kind of great and fun to play.”
Despite Emmanuel’s explanation, Twitter was flooded with fans questioning Grey Worm’s love making abilities once the scene aired. However, many have not considered the fact that most eunuchs, historically, are only castrated. The actor who plays Grey Worm, Jacob Anderson, stated on the DVD commentary for the episode, “I think Grey Worm’s got a willy is my understanding. But he doesn’t have balls.”
