Kids these days have a certain way of dressing that is different from how they used to dress back in the day. With the help of social media, teens today may be getting ideas to dress older than they really are.
As a result, dress codes may be getting more and more strict in schools that don’t have uniforms. Teachers and principals are either sending kids home or giving them a change of clothes if they show up dressed inappropriately.
But not all parents agree with schools intervening in their child’s outfit choices. One mom was so bothered that she wrote a letter to the principal who made her daughter change from her shorts to something a little baggier.
The letter was essentially inviting the principal to take her daughter shopping after she was in violation of the school’s dress code.
The mom was not happy at all that her daughter was sent home with a note two days in a row because she was dressed “inappropriately”
According to TODAY, the letter was filled with sarcasm, annoyingness and just pure frustration. The two clearly have different opinions on what’s inappropriate.
The letter started off by her writing “To reward you for treating my daughter with such concern, I am cordially inviting you to take my daughter shopping”
She continued with listing specifications, writing “She is 5’7” and 13 years old. Built more like her father, she has exceptionally long legs and arms”
“She doesn’t like anything pink or purple or frilly. She won’t wear pants because she gets overheated easily. Trust me I’ve seen this” The mother writes.
The letter continues with her essentially justifying why her daughter has to wear the clothes that she wears. Noting that “that’s a toughie”
The mom writes “Here are the tricky areas that are most difficult to avoid. As per your policy, she cannot wear tank tops, shorts and skirts must not extend to the end of fingertips”
Focusing on the short shorts problems, the mother writes “she has very long fingers which seem to make finding shorts that won’t get her sent to the principal’s office impossible”
She continues “I’d schedule a few afternoons and weekends for this endeavor. I can tell you from experience that just heading to the mall, Target won’t cut it”
The mom signs the letter “sick of the dress code mom.” She then thanks the principal for making it clear that her daughter’s body is a distraction to her and to the boys.
Earlier in the year, her mom pointed out that the gym teacher also told her she can’t wear yoga pants because the boys can’t control themselves.
After reading the letter that this mother wrote, people took to facebook to comment. Everyone had different opinions on the matter.
Some people felt for the mom, relating to having a tall daughter who can’t find clothes that fit the school policy. Others weren’t buying it and felt the mom was completely out of line.
Regardless, this mom obviously has her daughter’s best interest at heart and inviting the school principal to go shopping with her daughter is pretty genius.
Whether or not her daughter was dressed inappropriately, schools need to be cautious the way they approach the situation. They need to ensure confidence in their students, not make them feel bad.
