The decision to circumcise a baby boy is usually based on either a religious, social or cultural reason. It’s seen as being an optional surgical procedure that essentially removes a layer of skin. It’s usually done on the first few days after birth.
Though it is a very common procedure, not all parents decide to circumcise their newborn son. However, for this new mother, she didn’t really have a say in the matter. You can believe the shock when she opened her baby’s diaper.
She told various news outlets that when she opened her three-month-old baby’s diaper she found he had been circumcised without her consent. The woman who is from Nottingham said that she was so disturbed, she had to immediately leave the room.
According to the BBC, three suspects have been arrested over the incident, one of them being a family GP. Everyone is completely outraged.
She told the BBC, “I opened the nappy and I ended up having to leave the room because I felt hysterical.” The mother did not want to be identified.
The event happened back in July 2013, when the boy was only three-months-old. His mom originally contacted social services, then called the police in 2014.
An investigation did happen but it was seen as a non-criminal matter and the case was referred to the General Medical Council.
She then ended up getting help from a leading human rights lawyer Saimo Chahal QC and an anti-circumcision group called Men Do Complain.
The other two suspects arrested were a 44-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman believed to be the boy’s paternal grandparents. They’ve been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm.
According to the British Medical Association, male circumcision in the UK is assumed to be lawful given that there is a valid consent. But the mother believes the case amounts to “male genital mutilation”
She told the BBC “It’s even illegal to dock dogs’ tails. I’ve come home crying my eyes out thinking a dog has got more right than my child.”
