First dates can be nerve-wracking. Especially when you’re thinking way too much into it and you’ve been having a crush on this person for over a year.
However, these cringe-worthy moments are generally better suited for other people. I mean, come on, it’s just funnier to see these moments on a television screen. It’s never good when it happens to you but when you hear it or see it, it always gives you a good laugh. That’s where the German word schadenfreude comes from. It literally means taking pleasure or laughing at someone else’s misfortune. It doesn’t mean you’re innately evil or that you are some cynical, sadistic person, it’s just a kind-hearted chuckle at your friend’s awkward encounters. Ever since the advent of storytelling, we have been laughing at people’s awkward or cringe-worthy moments. That’s where movies such as Borat or Dumb and Dumber grew and floundered. But we at Providr have decided to take a close look at some first dates gone horribly wrong and awkward.
‘I met this amazing girl on campus as a sophomore in Chicago. I asked her out and it turns out that her identical twin sister was visiting her that weekend as well. She didn’t tell me that she would bring her along for our first date.’ (Zack Jaffri)
