It’s pretty easy to spot a tourist, especially when the place they’re touring is your hometown. However, it’s not always as simple as clumsily carrying a map or taking pictures of everything in sight, sometimes the dead giveaways are subject to the place. Here are 25 people who shared what makes a tourist stick out like a sore thumb in their towns.
1. Tourism is a major source of income for many countries and many businesses thrive on newcomers looking to experience a taste of the place others call home. Most of us, when traveling, want to blend in with the locals so we don’t get taken advantage of. However, being an out-of-towner, there are some mistakes a lot of us end up making that spotlight our naivety and displacement. Depending on where you’re from, there are certain surefire signs that someone is new in town. One Reddit user gathered a bunch of responses when asking the community, “What screams, ‘I’m a tourist,’ in your town or city?” One user, BlondeShadow, revealed how to spot out a vacationist in Phoenix, writing, “‘Let’s go hiking in 110° heat without water!’ Seriously, Phoenix gets tons of tourists who want to go hiking, but they completely underestimate the desert climate and go unprepared. The amount of helicopter rescues we have to do for tourists is ridiculous.”
2. Reddit user, grahamma, wrote, “The biggest sign of a tourist in DC and biggest annoyance is those who stand on the left-hand side of the metro escalator.” Apparently, grahamma isn’t alone in this frustration as a number of other users came to back up this statement. DC tourists take note!
