One of the hallmarks of the holiday season lately has been the annual deluge of editorials about which corporation, group, or people are waging a “war on Christmas.” This year’s target: Starbucks.
This year’s controversy is stemming from their cups, which depict two hands holding each other. It’s not clear who those hands belong to or even what gender those hands may identify as, but these hands have a small group of people Tweeting out “#BoycottStarbucks.”
You see, it all started when BuzzFeed wrote an article entitled: “People Are Saying Starbucks’ New Holiday Cup Is Totally Gay.” The article shows the cup next to a Starbucks commercial which features two women romantically holding hands.
BuzzFeed and various people online deduced that the young couple holding hands in the commercial is the same as the couple holding hands on the cup.
When BuzzFeed reached out to Starbucks to confirm or deny the genders of the the two hands they responded like this: ‘Each year during the holidays we aim to bring our customers an experience that inspires the spirit of the season, and we will continue to embrace and welcome customers from all backgrounds and religions in our stores around the world.’
Starbucks’ statement on the controversial cup neither confirms or denies the gender identity of the two hands.
One bit of evidence that gives some credence to the theory that the hands belong to a lesbian couple, is that Starbucks’ official Twitter account positively commented on a tweet that mentioned it.
Some individuals online, while tweeting about the story, ended their tweets with “#boycottstarbucks”
As of November 21, only 313 users have used the Hashtag, so it’s not like this little campaign is going to really scare the coffee chain, but it does show you that in this day and age people online will get upset at just about anything.
