It was Donald Trump’s first international broadcast interview since becoming President of the United States. Piers Morgan promoted the interview on his Twitter, saying “BREAKING NEWS: President Trump has declared he is NOT a feminist. He tells me: ‘No, I wouldn’t say I’m a feminist. I mean, I think that would be, maybe, going too far. I’m for women, I’m for men, I’m for everyone.'”

Although people who chose to tune into the interview had criticisms regarding Morgan’s professionalism as a journalist and Trump’s explanation for retweeting anti-Islam videos from UK far-right group Britain First, there was another element to the interview that led to even more controversy; the President’s water glass.

Many took to social media to share their conspiracy theories or just plain confusion over why the glass full of water next to Trump was covered. Some suggested it was because the President was paranoid over the possibility of someone slipping something into his drink, while others just posted a picture of the water glass and offered funny explanations like this:

The interview, which Morgan conducted during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, was criticized for its approach. Several viewers felt Morgan didn’t utilize the opportunity to ask the President more difficult questions. Then people’s focus began to shift, and what started as a heated debate over Morgan’s interviewing approach turned into an intense discussion about a glass of water.

Social media users were dying to know the reason behind Donald Trump’s covered water glass. Express.co.uk finally reported an explanation from Morgan as to why Trump’s glass was covered with paper.

The British host said a woman who has been working in the White House for years is designated to supply the President with water: “She gets a glass and pours a glass of the Presidential water in and then she produces a Presidential seal napkin and a Presidential seal cover – she then placed them [over the water].” Morgan says this is not unusual and is a gesture done for every President.
