On October 12, an eight-year-old boy was discovered dead in his Ohio home after three adults were shot in the same home. Arrest warrants had been issued for 23-year-old Arron Lawson for three counts of murder and one count of aggravated murder.
The child was one of the victims of a four-person homicide. A fifth victim, who is alleged to have been the father of the family, was stabbed in the neck and head but managed to escape and seek help from neighbors. He was then airlifted to a hospital in West Virginia.
In a statement made by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s office last week, the names of the victims were not released until the next of kin could identify the bodies. “We are in the very early stages of this investigation and cannot compromise this investigation by divulging more information at this time,” they added.
Police at first believed that the boy was missing after the shootings on October 11, but Lawson had hidden him in the house, where his body was discovered after a thorough investigation of the home a day later.
A neighbor, Kyle Evans, remembered that Lawson would babysit the boy and his brother sometimes. People reports that Evans remembers the child as being a very sweet boy. “In the summer we would take him to Bible school with us to our church in town. We’re down here at this barn all the time, me and my kids, and my oldest girl would always play with [him].”
Lawson was discovered after the shootings in a blue Chevrolet around 12:30 in the morning. A pursuit ensued with him and the police and he soon lost control of his vehicle and fled into the woods.
NBC reported that Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless said the search had mostly been sequestered to a wooded area of Upper Township north of Ironton. “It’s a strip mine area and a wooded area with caverns and caves everywhere so it’s been difficult for us but we’re making a complete search because that is the last place our suspect was spotted,” he told NBC.
He added that the motive behind the crime remains a mystery. “What we have here is a horrible, horrible tragedy. We’re talking to a lot of family and friends and everyone is dumbfounded. Everyone always got along especially with the amount of time [Lawson] spent there. So that’s something we hope to find out once we capture him,” NBC reported.
On October 13, Lawson was found by police. He was taken into custody where he faces four counts of murder, attempted murder, rape, abuse of a corpse, aggravated burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, tampering with evidence, and eluding police. If convicted, he could face the death penalty. His lawyer has yet to respond.
