For those of you who don’t know who Rich Piana was, he was a 46-year-old pro bodybuilder from Florida who had over 1.2 million followers on his Instagram. He took the internet by storm with his social media posts, workout plans, and supplement business.
Just two weeks after being placed in a medically induced coma, Rich Piana has died. His death was confirmed Friday morning in a Facebook post written by his estranged wife Sara Piana. She wrote, “Rich, I hope you feel better now in heaven…”.
According to TMZ, the bodybuilding champion was placed in a medically induced coma for nearly three weeks after he collapsed while getting a haircut in early August. He collapsed in his Florida apartment, which was filled with 20 bottles of steroids on August 7th.
Rich didn’t hide the fact that his body was injected with anabolic steroids. He opened up about it and said that he’s been doing it for over 30 years.
Though he’s known to take an excessive amount of steroids, his cause of death is still under investigation.
Piana opened up about his use of steroids back in 2014 in a YouTube post where he explained the costs and effectiveness of the drug.
He said, “If you want to become a professional bodybuilder, guess what? You’re probably going to have to do ‘em.”
But again, it’s unclear whether or not drugs actually had something to do with his death. In the video, he said that it’s pretty impossible to compete without body enhancing drugs.
According to Deadspin, Piana got interested in weightlifting when he was just 11 and went to his first competition when he was 15.
He promoted his “bigger by the day” challenge on his Instagram page, where he focused on his personal workout routine. He’s known to be pretty controversial for promoting steroids.
Richard Piana’s death comes only a few days after another bodybuilder’s death; 26-year-old Dallas McCarver who reportedly choked on food.
