In 2014, Selena Gomez was diagnosed with lupus and then in the following year, the pop superstar underwent chemotherapy to treat it. She has been very public about her medical condition and as one of the most followed people on Instagram, she has used her giant social media platform to share her story.
She recently posted a picture on her Instagram account of her and her friend side by side on a hospital bed.
The caption read: ‘I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health.’
Lupus is a disease that causes the body’s immune system to attack itself, such as its own organs and tissues.
Despite having this condition, Selena was still prolific in her work, showcasing new music, making guest appearances and even reportedly moving in with her boyfriend, the Weeknd.
She recently went on social media to explain her absence from the public eye. She said that a few months ago, she received a kidney transplant.
The transplant was something that she needed to do for her ‘overall health’ since it had to do with complications from lupus.
Her longtime friend, Francia Raisa, was the one who donated the kidney to her. In the post, Selena wrote: ‘she gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me.’
She continued on by saying: ‘ I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis.’
She finished off by thanking those that have supported her along the way and also for the medical team that stood by her side.
‘I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery.’
