Hurricane Harvey has caused over 20 confirmed deaths in Houston, Texas and surrounding areas. It has also made history and broken records for the amount of rainfall ever recorded in the United States. The Houston Police Department has reported that 3,500 people have been rescued from flooded areas thus far.
Naturally, images surrounding the natural disaster have been making the rounds via social media. One image in particular taken by David J. Phillip for the Associated Press has become the central focus of a debate so pointless that it’s now become a meme. The image depicts Houston Police SWAT officer Daryl Hudeck carrying Catherine Pham and her 13-month-old son Aiden after being rescued from their flooded home.
The image was shared by a self-proclaimed columnist for TheBlaze named Matt Walsh. He is described with the tagline: “Christian columnist and political incendiary Matt Walsh is an extremist—if truth if extreme.” Says enough about the kind of person we’re dealing with here. Naturally, Walsh’s platform caters to alt-right controversialists like Tomi Lahren (until she was fired for admitting she was ‘pro-choice’).
Nevertheless, one cannot be shocked that Walsh tweeted: “Woman cradles and protects child. Man carries and protects both. This is how it ought to be, despite what your gender studies professor says.”
It should be noted that hundreds of men have also been rescued by officials, some of those saviors being women.
Quite a few people were confused as to why Walsh was choosing to derail the significance of Hurricane Harvey with a sexist narrative so instead of starting a fight most people just mocked him instead.
One person responded with another shot of the image saying, “Woman cradles and protects child. Man carries and protects shoes.”
