Most of us hop on a plane for a vacation or a family reunion or any chance to get away from our day-to-day activities. This may be why most people are in a rush to get to where they have to go. Whether it’s baggage pickup or a gate or just to the washroom, it’s quite common to see people pushing their luggage in a hasty manner. But when a young woman encountered a man in distress, she not only stayed with him but did what most people absolutely hate to do at airports: intentionally delayed her flight.
Shaina Murry stayed with a stranger and even altered her flight plans to help console a young man. She then wrote about the experience on her Facebook, and the story went viral: it’s been shared over 2,000 times.
Here is the heartwarming story of what Shaina did for an absolute stranger. A modern day story of a Good Samaritan.
Shaina was one of many people that day at the Dallas/Fort Worth International airport when she was on her phone looking for her gate.
When she saw a man lying on the floor, she was not only alarmed but surprised that no one was helping this individual who was clearly in distress on the floor.
She knew she couldn’t leave this individual alone and unattended so she stopped and decided to stay with him. She then learned that his name was Will.
In an interview she said: ‘It was clear something was wrong, I just didn’t know what. It seemed best after asking him a few questions to call for medical assistance.’
After observing and talking to Will for a while, Shaina suspected that Will might have been autistic. So she decided to contact the medical personnel.
While they were waiting for help to arrive, Will repeatedly told Shaina that he was worried he was going to miss his flight.
In order to calm him down, Shaina decided to call Will’s mom. In Will’s desperate time of need, Shaina told his mother that Will wasn’t feeling too well and that the medical team was on their way.
Will’s mother responded by saying that Will most probably just needed a drink and something to eat. (He was supposed to board a flight to visit his mother and sister.) While Will’s mother was on the phone communicating with the medical team, they determined it was best for Will to get some food along with some water.
The medical personnel were worried if Will should still board the plane since they were concerned about his health.
In order to assist Will, Shaina had American Airlines change her flight so that she could go to lunch with Will and escort him to the airport.
Shaina said that she is glad to have helped Will and is thankful to American Airlines for being so helpful and not charging her for changing her flight plan.
After they had lunch together at the airport, Shaina guided Will to his terminal and made sure that he boarded his plane just fine.
Will along with his mother are both extremely grateful that Shaina stopped and helped him at his time of need. Shaina said that she merely did what she thought ‘was right’ and said that American Airlines played a vital role as well.
She mentioned that they had called her to let her know that Will’s gate had changed and that when they got to the gate the attendants checked on him to make sure he was OK.
In her Facebook post she thanked the American Airlines staff, the medical personnel and also the local police for helping her and Will out.
“Today was not at all what I pictured it to be. It has turned out so much better. I had an amazing lunch with a wonderful young man from Louisville, Kentucky. While I don’t know him well, I know he has a heart of gold and a wonderful mother and sister who he loves very much. After texting with his mom—she loves him just as much.”
