Guinness World Records have worked to document the feats of both human achievements and extremes of the natural world. While some people tirelessly attempt to break a record, Garry ‘Stretch’ Turner managed to claim a title for his ability to stretch his skin to abnormal lengths.
With the ability to stretch the skin on his abdomen an incredible 6.25 inches, Garry Turner, earned himself the title of having the world’s stretchiest skin. The Elastic Man performed his record-breaking achievement on the set of “Guinness World Records: Primetime” on October 29th, 1999.
Turner explained that he first became aware of his superhuman ability to stretch his skin when he was around 8 years old and compared himself to classmates. After discovering that he was the only one with absurdly stretchy skin, Turner realized he had something special.
However, the reason Turner can extend his skin to such lengths is due to a rare medical condition called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a disorder of the connective tissues affecting the skin, ligaments and internal organs. The condition makes the collagen, which strengthens the skin and determines its elasticity, defective. With this, Turner’s skin is much looser than the average person, but he states that his condition causes him no pain.
While on the set of “Guinness World Records: Primetime,” Gary ‘Stretch’ Turner showed off multiple ways in which his elastic skin can extend, including how he can pull the skin from his neck completely over his lower jaw.
Despite his ability to extend his skin unnaturally, Turner says that he doesn’t ever get stretch marks. However, when the host asked if he could tie his skin in a knot, Turner joked, “Now that’s stretching it.”
Gary Turner’s incredible ability has continued to be an Internet sensation since airing on television back in 1999. On the Guinness World Records’ YouTube channel, Turner’s record-breaking feat has been viewed over 17 million times and counting.
