Thousands have signed a petition to free a convicted murderer in Alabama. Jay Maynor, a 43-year-old Alabama man, was sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of the man who sexually abused his daughter.
Raymond Earl Brooks, the man who sexually abused Maynor’s daughter Julia, now 24, is Julia’s adopted maternal grandfather. He pled guilty to the crime of sexual abuse in 2002 and served 27 months of his five-year prison sentence. After being released, he was registered as a sex offender and moved back to Alabama, not far from Julia’s home.
Ten years after Brooks was released from prison, Maynor shot Brooks and killed him. This act was supposedly provoked by something Julia had revealed to her father about the sexual abuse. Julia does not believe that her father should be sentenced to prison, because he was simply trying to protect her. A petition has been started to free Julia’s father, and thousands have already signed it.
“He took my innocence away and only served like 18 months, and now I suffer daily from what Raymond did to me. It’s not fair,” Julia explained. She also explained that because of the sexual abuse, she now suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress disorder.
It’s unsure how far, if at all, this petition will go. Those signing the petition agree that the sentence is too harsh and should be lowered. Thousands of supporters have already signed the petition, and are calling out to the public for help.
“I was so young, I don’t remember when it started but when I finally told someone I was 8. For the first time in my life I do not feel scared. For the first time in my life I do not wake up feeling fear,” Julia said.
Maynor will be charged with first degree murder, shooting into an occupied dwelling, and attempted murder.
