Donald Trump Jr’s birthday celebration has become national news after a picture of him holding an Obama-mocking dessert took heat on Twitter.
On December 17th, the president’s eldest son shared a snap of himself with Senator Ted Cruz and a birthday cookie gifted to him by friends. The controversial cookie featured a portrait of the former president that any toddler’s mother would be proud to hang on the fridge, although it is unclear whether the amateurish work is accidental or deliberate. What is unambiguously deliberate is the expression of pained disgust that Trump Jr. is giving the camera; managing to make Senator Cruz’s face the most normal-looking one in the photo.
“With friends like these… some good friends decided that while my birthday is not for 2 weeks that they would get me an early 40th birthday cake,” Trump Jr. captioned the photo in a post on Instagram. “And what birthday is complete without an Obama cake? I figured it was so good that I would have to share it with Ted.”
The online reception of Trump Jr.’s photo was less than sweet. Many remarked that the president’s son was pushing “fake news” by referring to what is obviously a cookie as a “birthday cake.” Others noted that Trump Jr. was a grown adult mocking his political rivals on social media via confectionery-based insults. “You are a 40 year old man spending your birthday hating and being disrespect[ful],” wrote Instagram-user iscorpio26. “That fact that you couldn’t find something better to than to hate on another man shows your true character.”
