Co-parenting can be hard after a breakup, but most parents agree that it’s their child who comes first not their own personal feelings about each other or each other’s spouses. Still, when your ex gets a new partner things can be a little awkward for a while. You never know how an individual might react to your child. What if you don’t agree with their style?
Luckily for Brittney Johnson, the new transition was pretty smooth. In fact, she’s now good friends with her ex’s new girlfriend, Kayla Imhoff. Johnson and her ex, Charlie, have one daughter together named Payton, and little Payton absolutely means the world to Johnson, Charlie, and Imhoff.
On Facebook, Johnson wrote an open letter and a positive post about Imhoff and how much she means to her and little Payton. She started off by addressing the other mothers who feel threatened when their ex gets a new partner saying, “To all of the mothers out there who throw a fit when another woman treats your child as her own: why isn’t that exactly what you want?”
“I prayed one night for the type of woman my daughter’s father would be with, knowing that she would be raised in two homes,” Johnson continued. She went on to say that Imhoff “has been a gift of so much more than I could have hoped for.” She calls her a “true role model” and an “amazing bonus mom” for little Payton.
Johnson even uploaded a photo to make her point, a snapshot of Imhoff and Payton. “Kayla started nursing school and Payton has been infatuated ever since. So Kayla ordered a pair of mini scrubs for [Payton] to match.”
While being interviewed by Babble, Johnson told a simple story of what things were like at first. “My first impression of Kayla was that she was sweet and brave for deciding to meet Charlie’s daughter.” Imhoff and Payton were actually introduced at the same time Johnson and Imhoff were.
“My child is my world, and when I realized that Kayla’s interest was to treat Payton as her own, it was a huge relief for me.” She says that she and Imhoff are close friends who co-parent together and spend time with her as a team as well as individually. Her post has now been shared more than 48, 000 times and garnered 66,000 likes with 4.1 thousand comments.
